Introduction:

The word balance stands for a split of 50/50 but in nutrition the word is definitely different as balance stands for eating the right amount of wide range food groups.

Balanced diet aims for variety of food groups including vegetables; fruits; wholegrains; lean animal or vegetarian protein, such as meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, nuts, legumes; and dairy foods, such as cheese, milk and yoghurt.

When you have variety of main food groups you will get enough fiber to keep digestion smooth, protein for muscle building and carbs-boosting energy. In addition you will get micronutrient that contribute to overall health.

Adding colourful vegetables and fruits to your diet will add carotenoids that are beneficial for health.

Variety of healthy foods means you are getting good amount of variety of minerals and vitamins like calcium, iron, zinc, folate, B vitamins, vitamin C, beta-carotene, fibre and phytonutrients.

Phytonutrients are responsible for fighting disease and keep your health well.

It is okay to leave 10-15% of your total daily consumption for your favourite food but always remember that moderation is the key. Remember always to count your calories as overeating from high fat food will add pounds to your body.

If you are planning for healthy and a balanced diet aim to plan ahead for your meal, write down on shopping list and do cooking preparations and sessions.
