Introduction:

Dry mouth is a normal side effects of keto diet as increasing your fat intake to about 80 percent of your daily calories and slashing carbs to below 50 net grams per day can take a toll on the body's hydration.

As your body shift to ketosis state an imbalance of fluid and electrolytes will occur. So the solution will be drinking a lot of water with low carbs fluid.

Here's what to know about keto dry mouth, the excessive thirst that comes with piling bacon and nut butter onto your plate all day.

Why, exactly, does keto make my mouth so dry?

Carbohydrates upon digestion they will be stored as glycogen and each grams of glycogen need 3 grams of water to be stored. Thirst during keto diet occur from the lost water as the body uses glycogen for energy when it shifts to ketosis state.

Another reason for thirst, is low insulin level due to ketosis status. A you eat carbs you pancreas release insulin into the blood to lower blood sugar and trigger the kidney to hold water and sodium. As you eliminate carbs and sugar from the diet, the kidney will release stored sodium and water which will be excreted into the urine and thirst will occur.

What should I do about keto dry mouth?

The solution is easy, drink plenty of water and listen to your thirst sensation. Avoid sugary drink as they are not suitable from your body and replace them with added salt to water.

You can consume foods that contain water and are keto-friendly, like cucumbers, green leafy veggies, avocado, and berries. You might also notice some cramping as a result of dehydration. Besides drinking water, you can ease the discomfort with stretching, yoga, massage, or even Epsom salts in the bath.
