Poor sleep or sleep deprivation not only increase risk of weight gain it can be serious and dangerous as it increases risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, cancer, type 2 diabetes, etc. Improving sleep quality is a key point for maintaining optimal health.
How sleep affects your weight loss
Here are a few reasons why getting enough sleep may be the key to losing weight.
Increases your appetite: Studies have been shown that inadequate sleep has been linked with low level of leptin and high level of ghrelin and as a result increase caloric intake and weight gain.
Increases your calorie intake: Studies have been shown that bad quality sleep or insufficient sleep hours have been linked to increase intake of unhealthy choices which lead to weight gain in the abdominal area.
Slows down your metabolism: Studies suggest that poor sleep affect RMR: the metabolic rate and eventually weight gain will occur. More studies show that inadequate sleep is linked to muscle mass loss.

Enough sleep is important for overall health including weight loss. You need approximately 7-9 hours of sleeping and it varies according to age.
