Sesame seeds (Til) for diabetes: How the oilseeds can help in blood sugar management
Introduction:
Diabetes is a chronic disease resulted from low insulin secretion by pancreas and the result will be high blood sugar. If it is left untreated it can lead to serious conditions.
Yet diabetes can be managed by healthy lifestyle, exercise and medications to keep blood sugar under control. Adding some food could really help to manage some diabetes side effects.
Sesame seeds, also known as til are tiny, edible seeds that come from a plant called the Sesamum genus.Sesame seeds can be used as toppings on salads, bread, cakes, or basically anything that the flavour would go with. Sesame seeds and their nutrient content may also help you become healthy and also control blood sugar levels if you are diabetic.
Rich source of plant protein:
3 tablespoon of sesame seeds provide 5 grams of fiber. Sesame seeds contain two amino acids called methionine and cysteine which are both missing and found in little amount in legumes. Protein is essential for hormones production including insulin.
Good source of fibre
They are good source of fiber and their regular consumption could contribute to the overall fiber intake, Moreover, fiber is slowly digested so it keeps blood sugar stable that is why sesame seeds could be beneficial for managing diabetes.
Low carbohydrate content
They have low carbs content and thus they control blood sugar.
Sesame seeds contain pinoresinol
Pinoresinol is a compound that can help regulate blood sugar by inhibiting the action of the enzyme maltase. Maltase is a digestive enzyme that breaks down blood sugar maltose. Sesame seeds contain pinoresinol, which when inhibits the breakdown of maltose, can help in controlling sugar.
Rich in antioxidants
Antioxidants are important to get rid of unwanted toxins that increase risk of inflammation. Antioxidants could lower risk of diabetes and improve insulin production.
Sesame seeds support the immune system
Sesame seeds improve immunity due to their nutrient content and therefore can keep diseases away. Having diabetes can put you at risk of other diseases also, and therefore good immunity is important to fight those diseases and help your body be healthy.
