Hydroxytyrosol naturally occurs in olive plants and mostly in leaves, extra virgin olive oils and table olives, in the form of elenolic acid ester oleuperin.
Hydroxytyrosol is a type of phenolic phytochemical that has antioxidant properties and is considered one of the most powerful natural antioxidants. Its oxygen radical absorbing capacity value is one of the highest found in plants.
The researchers have confirmed the chemopreventive properties that hydroxytyrosol might have in the treatment of breast cancer.
The findings revealed that hydroxytyrosol acts directly upon breast cancer stem cells, reducing their number and aggressiveness as well as inhibiting their capacity to multiply.
The research findings on hydroxytyrosol are the basis of a clinical trial currently being conducted at the Houston Methodist Hospital, which studies the effects that this compound has on the prevention of breast cancner in high-risk patients. Additionally, they serve as as foundation for testing hydroxytyrosol in xenographic animal models derived from triple-negative breast cancer patients.
