FODMAP or fermentable oligo DI monosaccharide and polyols pass through the intestine unchanged and they are categorized as dietary fiber.


Some carbohydrate, like fructose and lactose act as FODMAP in some individuals and may contribute to irritable bowel syndrome.


What results from these components is different symptoms like bloating, stomach cramps, gas, pain, and constipation; in addition to diarrhea as they are osmotically active.


FODMAP diet is a new concept to treat people with IBS as a way to reduce symptoms and improve quality of life. Studies have been shown a reduction in IBS symptoms after following a low FODMAP diet.


Food to avoid when you are following FODMAP diet:


*Fruits like apple, apricots, applesauce, figs, blackberries, cherries, watermelon, peaches, pears, canned fruits, and dates


*Sweeteners: Fructose, FCS, xylitol, mannitol, maltitol, sorbitol


*Dairy product: milk, ice cream, yogurt, sour cream, soft and fresh cheese in addition to whey protein


* Vegetables: Artichokes,asparagus,broccoli,beetroot, brussels sprout, cabbage,cauliflower,mushroom,okra,onion,peas, garlic and leeks


*Legumes: beans, chickpeas, lentils, red kidney beans, baked beans soybeans


* Wheat: Bread,pasta, cereals,tortillas,waffles,pancakes,crackers,biscuits


*Beverages: Beer, fortified wines, soft drinks with HFCS, milk, soy milk, and fruit juices


*Other grains: barley and rye
