Some foods have what's known as a health halo—they seem like smart choices, but in reality, they're not. I call them food fakers! Here are few examples.
Granola
It is made of healthy nutrients but it is calorie dense as people tend to overeat granola as a main cereal or snack which end up of the day with a lot of calories as one cup of granola has almost 450 calories and 16 grams of fat even low fat granola can count up to 400 calories. So to enjoy it mix it with high fiber food to keep portion control and calories under control.
Regular Greek Yogurt
An 8-ounce serving of the plain type has around 280 calories and 20g fat. The fat-free stuff, on the other hand, has about 130 calories for the same amount and it often comes in snack-sized containers with 100 calories each. Be careful, because the packages look extremely similar .So if you don’t like plain yogurt you can stir in a no calorie sweetener, fruit or high fiber cereal.
Restaurant Salads
Salad yes are healthy but do you know the amount of calories in salad at restaurant that it is due to creamy toppings like full fat cheese, tortilla and breaded chicken. Even vinaigrette that seems healthy it provides 180 calories and 18 grams of fat per two tablespoon.
If you like salad at restaurant you can choose the light choice and those prepared with basic salad dressing: olive oil and lemon.
Sandwich Wraps
Many people think that sandwich wraps can be light choice but they don’t know how calories are hidden inside them. Like tortilla for example it contains 300 calories and more, moreover tortilla can hold more ingredients mean more calories.
Instead you can choose whole grain bread or to look for high-fiber tortillas with 110 calories or less. In addition, fill your sandwich with chicken breast or turkey and lettuce.
Restaurant Baked Potatoes
Baked potato is good choice and a standard serving size is about 6 ounces but when it comes to restaurants baked potatoes makes 12 ounces so more calories too.
Sugar-Free/Fat-Free Desserts
It's easy to assume that anything sugar-free or fat-free is automatically diet friendly. But these foods are often loaded with calories, despite being low in sugar or fat.
Sugar free desserts tend to have more fat than non-fat dessert that have higher sugar. If you're out and about and craving dessert, go for fresh berries with a squirt of whipped cream or have a small scoop of sorbet. Don’t forget to read food labels carefully.
Bran Muffins
Bran muffins are non-diet friendly breakfast. An average bran muffins packs around 450 calories and 14g fat, even if you choose low fat muffin they are packed with sugar.
Grab a big piece of fruit. And if you want to make muffins at home, use better-for-you substitutes like light whipped butter or light buttery spread, fat-free liquid egg substitute or egg whites, and no-sugar-added applesauce.
