Type 2 diabetes: One snack proven to lower blood sugar and reduce risk of condition

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease when blood sugar remains high due to insulin resistance. If it left untreated it may lead to serious complications like nerve and eye damage in addition to kidney problems.


One way to keep blood sugar under control is to have a healthy eating pattern that is offer a good amount of fruits and vegetables, lean protein sources and low in fat and starchy carbs.


Some food alone has been linked to lower sugar properties and one of them is walnuts.

Walnuts are good source of omega-3 and heart healthy fats which is important to keep heart healthy. People with diabetes are at risk of heart disease.


According to a study done in 2018 eating walnuts in linked to lower risk of diabetes. Moreover, avoiding high cholesterol level is important in diabetic patients as exposure to high blood glucose levels increases the risk of the arteries narrowing.

Nuts like peanuts, pistachios and almonds lower LDL cholesterol while raising on the other hand HDL which is the good cholesterol. So nuts in general would reduce risk of heart disease.


Another food is onion which has an anti-diabetic effects come from compounds such as quercetin and sulphur.


Quercetin has been shown to interact with cells in small intestine, pancreas, skeletal muscle, fat tissue and liver to control blood sugar regulation.


Moreover, you need to stay active and aim to have 150 minutes of exercise five times weekly of moderate intensity.


Diabetes.co.uk explained: “Aerobic activity at moderate intensity basically means exercising at a level that raises your heart rate and makes you sweat. This includes a multitude of sports.”
