Celiac disease:
T cells are type of white blood cells that are critical to immune system and they are normally found in the bowel as protective healing tissues.
In celiac disease, T cells produce inflammation when exposed to gluten and lead to damage of the lining cells of intestine and thus lea to acute symptoms.
Chronic inflammation will lead to immunological scar and loss of intestinal resident gamma delta T cells which is important for fighting against infection.
Early diagnosis and intervention is important to prevent permanent damage to the bowel.
Gluten-free diet may alleviate symptoms but it is not enough to prevent permanent damage.
