Type 2 diabetes: The best type of bread to prevent high blood sugar and control condition

Diabetes type 2 is a chronic disease when blood sugar is too high and this is due to insulin resistance. As a result you need to control your blood sugar by avoiding simple sugar, sodas and carbonated beverages in addition to refined white bread that have high glycaemic index and can raise blood sugar.

This does not mean that people with diabetes need to avoid all types of bread instead they can add safely to their diet whole grain bread.

This is because wholegrain foods - as the name suggests - contain all parts of the grain, but when grains are refined, the outer bran layer and germ are stripped away, losing many nutrients and much of their fibre.

In addition it is rich in insoluble fibre which cannot be digested by human body instead it passes throughout the digestive system and provides bulks to stools.

Wholegrain bread is a great source of insoluble fibre, which can also help to control blood sugar.

One slice of wholegrain bread provides the same fibre content as two-and-a-half slices of white bread.

This fibre content gives wholegrain bread a property of low glycaemic index and then low blood sugar. Moreover, fibre has been linked to weight loss and low complications associated with diabetes like heart disease.

Diabetes: Four common symptoms

Frequent urinating

Going to the toilet more frequently and especially at night can be a sign of diabetes and it could be a sign of prostate cancer so consult your doctor.

This is due to the fact that extra sugar in the body forces that kidney to have extra work and absorb more sugar, if this fail the result will be excretion of sugar along with water that is cause frequent urination.

Thirst

Polydipsia which is frequent thirst is linked to diabetes type 2 and it is due to frequent urination.

Blurred vision

High levels of blood sugar can cause the lens inside the eye to swell, which can result in blurred eyesight.

Very low blood sugar levels can also cause blurred vision.

Weight loss

If you are not on a weight loss diet and you notice loss of muscles or weight on the scale this is can be a sign of diabetes.

This happens because insufficient insulin prevents the body from getting glucose from the blood to the cells to use as energy.

The body will then start burning fat and muscle for energy, causing weight loss.
